London's Soho is a mecca for records
shops and this is one of two in D'Arblay
Street, Black Market Records. It's been there since 1987 and is
one of the most popular around and it's not hard to see why.
Spread over two floors and being the 4 to the
floor lovers that we are our main interest lies in the ground floor.
Here they stock all kinds of house, tribal, tech, funky, prog, vocal,
filtered, get the drift, everything really. With all the tunes on
huge racks on the wall it's easy to browse before you buy or listen,
the latter with 4 or so listening posts. In the racks you'll find
UK, US, Italian, promos everything you can want as well as exclusives
from their own labels, Azuli and Z Records.
At the back on the ground floor you'll find the
usual merchandise, record bags, slip mats etc, buy tickets to some
top gigs and pick up flyers to see what's happening.
Get yourself downstairs to the basement for a
top selection of Drum and Bass and Underground, loosely translating
as UK Garage/Two Step and more.
Ably staffed by working DJ's such as Lee, Miss
Jools and Rap on the house floor and Nicky, Clarky and Ray in the
basement they should be able to find exactly what you want, even
something from under the counter if you're one of their favoured
customers.
The fact that they have been around for so long
means they must be doing something right. The sheer quantity of
records in stock along with the top quality does mean that you will
find what you need even if you may need a second mortgage and a
white van to get it all home.
