R U FEELIN' WONKEY?
While the fashionable may tell you what the new
black is and if something is "so last week.." down in
deepest Devon a queue of a couple of hundred people outside the
Quay club in Plymouth will let you know that monday is the new weekend.
For over a year now Wonkeylegs has been packing
them in, thanks to two men, the promoter Ben Bryant working under
Defcon Presents and Dj Aldo Vanucci. Playing hip hop, drum n bass
and breakbeat to over four hundred, week in and week out, with the
help of local boys Bloodshot and Supa 8. This isn't School Disco,
it isn't big name Djs, its just pure underground classics mixed
and blended to perfection. Those familiar with Aldo Vanucci's vinyl
outings will know he's not afraid to mix records together that shouldn't
work but do, love 'em or hate em mash ups of Coldplay mixed with
Dj Krust, Shy FX mixed with Jeru the Damaja and plenty of vocal
accapellas mixed over beats to make the regulars go nuts. "We've
always tried to give back in some way, we always have giveaways
and freebies, not some corporate marketing ploy but just our way
of saying thank you". When there was a problem with the air
conditioning they gave out hundreds of ice pops to cool people off,
goody bags at Christmas and a limited mix CD.
Wonkeylegs is now the night in town with no signs
of abating, Ben and
Aldo are not resting on their laurels or trying to rinse the night
for all
its worth "We've got lots of ideas to keep the whole thing
fresh whilst
retaining that very Wonkey vibe". Imitation being the sincerest
form of
flattery they are both pleased to see others trying to copy what
they do. "When we started there wasn't anything like what we
are doing happening, now everyone is having a go".
