And so it came to pass, year three of the Angel.
So what the hell are we talking about, well if you have been asleep
in clubland for the last three months and have missed the hype we’ll
tell you. On Saturday/Sunday 26th and 27th of July 2003 we saw the
third episode of Godskitchen's "Global Gathering" on an
airfield in the middle of nowhere.
They bill it as the biggest clubbing event of
the year where the emphasis is more on the production and DJ's than
the live acts, oh and the 35,000 odd punters who turn up as well.
And so it proved, it will probably be the biggest event of the year
and if it was not for the rain and the mud, lots of it, it might
have been about the production as well but maybe the outside stages
and circus acts got washed away?
But what did we actually think after the hype,
the anticipation and the coach journey from sunny Essex (it was
when we started you see). We looked in a dictionary trying to come
up with some clever arsed word that some arty journalist would use,
but they were all stupid or you wouldn't know what they meant so
we will say just one word "AWESOME".
Now that word should not be used lightly, an over used word really,
but that is exactly what it was. Okay so there were some gripes,
but then we griped when we stayed in a 5 star hotel in Florida earlier
in the year, it's life you know, get used to it.
The set up was excellent, the queues for the bars
and food were non-existant (maybe something to do with the very
high prices!) and we might hesitate to say, the service was generally
good.
At approaching 4.00 pm the queue to get in looked huge and was moving
slowly. “Here we go, the great British disease of queueing
strikes again", but all of sudden it moved pronto like and
there you were, inside, with a nice warm glow inside (wet on the
outside of course) ready to dance the night away.
Unfortunately the weather had decided not to play
the game, at exactly 3.50 pm the rain started, lightly at first
but before long it was raining the proverbial cats and dogs. It
didn't ease off until around 10.00pm by which time the damage had
been done, it was official; the place was a mudbath (with the exception
of the funfair that was situated on what we guess was an old runway).
Now the arrival of the rain so early on seemed
to do the Gallery tent a big favour as it was nearest to the entrance
and in no time at all was packed. It was all hands in the air, glow
sticks, air horns and muddy fluffy boots, awesome, see it's that
word again.
After a while we decided to hit the next nearest tent, this time
Bedrock, it was still early so it was a bit laid back with a lot
of people sitting around. Time to move on and time for a music adrenalin
fix at the Sundissential arena. This place was kickin’, in
fact they all kicked, Tiesto in the Godskitchen arena, Sanchez in
Babooshka, Carl Cox in Global, yes it kicked wherever you wanted
it to. Even Judge Jules managed to round it off nicely for the last
hour and a half. In between the arenas we hit the impressive fun
fair, drank (a lot), ate (a lot, for energy purposes you understand)
and hit the herbal stands.
All in all we had a damn fine time, sure
there are plus and minus points but the plusses beat the minuses
hands down and anyway it’s in a bloody field, you can’t
expect the Ritz and five star facilities.
It's unfair to try and pick the best arena as they were all excellent
for different reasons, the atmosphere's, the DJ's, the music, the
punters, they all combined to make one hell of an event, missed
it? then you missed out, sucker...
